How to clean your Pillar in ten minutes

Hemluft journal

You'll need

The empty bottle that came in the box, a capful of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), and ten minutes.

Steps

1. Unscrew the oil bottle and cap it. 2. Pour about 10 ml of rubbing alcohol into the empty bottle and screw it in. 3. Run the Pillar on high for 10–15 minutes near an open window. 4. Remove the bottle, let the unit sit for five minutes, then reattach your oil.

How often

Every 4–6 months for daily use. If the mist looks thinner than usual or the scent seems weaker, clean it sooner — that's almost always the fix.

What not to do

Don't tip the unit upside down with a bottle attached, and never run water‑ or alcohol‑based liquids through it. If you use your own oils, keep to thin essential oils and skip carrier‑oil blends — thick oils clog the nozzle and aren't covered by the warranty.

Why hotel lobbies smell the way they do

Hemluft journal

Walk into a good hotel and the scent is everywhere and nowhere: never strong at the door, never gone by the lifts. That evenness is the product of nebulisation — cold air pushed through oil until it becomes a dry mist — usually ducted into the air‑conditioning.

Why it works

Nano‑scale droplets stay airborne for hours and ride ordinary air currents, so the concentration is nearly the same across a large space. Candles and reeds produce a gradient: strong near the source, nothing ten feet away.

Doing it at home

The Pillar is the same mechanism, sized for a living room instead of a lobby. Run it in windows rather than all day; your nose resets during the off‑hours and notices the scent again when it starts.

Choosing a scent for each room

Hemluft journal

Entrance and living room

Damask Rose. Soft and unmistakably floral without being sweet — the note guests notice at the door.

Kitchen and open‑plan spaces

Amalfi Lemon. Citrus cuts through cooking smells, and the sea‑salt edge keeps it from smelling like cleaning product.

Study or evening room

Temple Sandalwood. Warm, dry and a little smoky; it suits rooms where you want to settle in.

Bedroom

Midnight Jasmine, on low, for an hour before bed. Heady at first, then soft; it settles a room.

One rule

Don't run it continuously. Two or three windows a day keep the scent noticeable for months.

Diffusers and pets: what actually matters

Hemluft journal

Cats in particular lack the liver enzymes to process certain phenols and ketones found in raw essential oils like tea tree, eucalyptus and wintergreen. That is the real concern behind the warnings you'll read online.

What's different here

Hemluft oils are formulated blends, not raw oils, and don't contain those compounds at levels considered harmful. There's no heat, so nothing is chemically altered, and no water, so there's no damp film for a pet to lick off a surface.

Sensible use

Start on low, keep the room ventilated, make sure the animal can leave the room, and if it has a respiratory condition, ask your vet. Never let a pet ingest oil.
